2003 – 2009: WELLINGTON ZOO TRUST (WZT) Board Member

The Wellington City  Zoo had become a liability to the WCC, and so they turned it into a Council Owned Entity, establishing the Wellington Zoo Trust to take over the running of it.

I was invited to apply, and then appointed to the WZT establishment board for an initial term of 2 years. I was later re-appointed for another term of 3 years.

In that time, the WZT secured much needed additional funding to improve the overall visitor experience, improve the Zoo animals habitat, and through fund-raising and prudent financial management of the Council’s own contributions, add valuable new assets for the Zoo. The last major capital project I was involved in as a Trustee was The Nest, a world class regional veterinary hospital, for Zoo animals and regional wildlife.

I enjoyed being a part of the WZT, and working closely with the CEO and executive team, Zoo attendances increased year on year, the overall visitor experience was enhanced, staff satisfaction improved, and the Zoo has once again become a genuine, well loved asset for the city.
